Although garlic is only a spice, it should be eaten year-round because it contains sulfur-containing compounds as well as anti-inflammatory and even anti-infection properties, which helps prevent cancers, bad cold, common flu, heart disease, and etc.Garlic is a pungent super food that any healthy diet should include. In the winter, people get bad colds, so eating garlic may help you prevent this type of infection.

Turnip greens

Turnip’s leaves are very good for our health, one leaf alone contains over 100% daily requirement of vitamins A and K, 55% of vitamin C, 27% of folate and about 10% of calcium and manganese.Turnip greens grow from October to March making them available and fresh during the winter season.


Leaks are part of the allium family along with onions and garlic, which contain disease-fighting phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Besides, they are loaded with antioxidant polyphenols that can protect blood vessels. Leeks seem to be stronger than other allium family members in nutritional content thanks to a healthy complement of vitamins (A, B6, C, K), folate and iron. They  grow from October to May.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes, typically orange or yellow-fleshed, they contain vitamins (A, C, B6) and minerals (potassium and manganese). Besides, they have no fat and few calories. Sweet potato contains 0.14 ounces of fiber plus 0.07 ounces of vegetable protein. Their peak seasons run from November to December and April to May.


Rapini, the distant relative of turnip, contains impressive nutritional content including vitamins (A, C, K), minerals (calcium, manganese and even iron) and lutein, which protect the eyes from oxidative damage. Rapini grows rapidly from October to March. Rapini with dried tomatoes and pine nuts is also a healthy food mixture for the winter months.


Cabbage in general and red cabbage in particular are good winter foods for almost all people thanks to high content of vitamins like A, B6, C, K. The red cabbage also becomes famous thanks to its anti-inflammatory action. You can enjoy raw or boiled cabbage based on your taste to help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease.
